Experience the Magic of Fiordland on Film at Fiordland Cinema
‘Ata Whenua – Shadowland’: See parts of Fiordland you wouldn’t ordinarily see!
An inspirational film Director by the name of Dave Comer teamed up with the locals of Fiordland to put together this spectacular and unique 32-minute movie filmed from a helicopter, it came to be known as, ‘Ata Whenua – Shadowland’ (also known as ‘Fiordland on Film’).
Its uniqueness is that it features many stunning hidden corners of Fiordland’s World Heritage Park with its breath-taking beauty that is typically inaccessible to mankind because of its remote location.
Fiordland Cinema itself is quite fun and quirky. The award-winning architecturally designed building built in 2004 boasts a large, curved screen and cutting-edge Dolby surround sound to maximise the visual and auditory experience which can be enjoyed from large comfortable seats. Interestingly the theatre was specifically designed to show ‘Ata Whenua – Shadowland’! Viewings are held regularly, typically on the hour between 10.00 am – 7.00 pm, however, it is best to call them in advance to check availability.
Visitors can also enjoy a glass of local Fiordland wine or craft beer before, during or even after the movie, around the fire in the Black Dog Bar. For those who don’t wish to indulge in alcoholic beverages they can make the most of the barista-made coffee instead or treat themselves to the typical offerings of pop-corn or ice-cream.
Many visitors say that their visit to Fiordland is not complete without experiencing ‘Ata Whenua – Shadowland’. If you wish to find out more when staying at luxury High Leys Lodge in Te Anau, your friendly hosts Sarah and John will help you with any enquiries you may have.
