TE ANAU GLOW WORM CAVES
Did You Know There Are Glow Worm Caves in Te Anau?
Tucked away in the tranquil beauty of Te Anau, New Zealand, lies a natural wonder that captures the hearts and souls of all who venture there: the Glow Worm Caves. These caves, adorned with the iridescent light of thousands of tiny glow worms, offer an experience that is truly unique and impressive.
Formation and Discovery of the Caves
At approximately 12,000 years old, the Glow Worm Caves are a dynamic part of the Aurora cave system that were carved by the Tunnel Burn stream that originally flowed from Lake Orbell to Lake Te Anau.
Over time, this water cut through the mountain, gradually eroding the soft limestone within the cave system. Even today, the caves continue to evolve as the mildly acidic stream dissolves rock and transforms small cracks into vast voids.
The twists and turns of the Aurora cave system stretch over 6.7 kilometers and span four sprawling levels and were once part of Maori legend.
In 1948, after three years of relentless searching, explorer Lawson Burrows uncovered the hidden entrance. Diving under the lake’s edge and resurfacing inside the cave, he knew the allure would appeal to visitors to the region and so he began the first cave tourism operation.
